Update from the Greenhouse!

I (Teri) am happy to announce Brenna joining our Noggins Farm Team!  My husband Jon and I are moving to Manitoba, and it's been a pleasure to train Brenna into my role.  Best of luck to all my friends at the markets, and as of next week you'll have Brenna full-time at the Pop Ups!  I will pass the torch on to Brenna officially now!  -- Teri

This Week at the Markets:

Many people have been asking about the availability of kale! The answer is soon! Here's a stellar photo of the kale in Dean Manning's greenhouse growing like crazy. This week keep your eye out for his excellent spinach and mesclun mix!

Don't forget to pick up your cut squash because supply is running out soon!
See you at the markets!

This Week at Market

This week at market we have the first of the peppers from den Haan Greenhouses.  Local sweet
peppers!  This farm also produces stunning cluster tomatoes, grape tomatoes, and english cucumbers -- Available at all the markets.

Spinach is in full swing, and we also have mesclun mix - a blend of different cooking greens like mustards, bok choy, kale, and spinach.

Squash is nearly done for the season, but we still have bags of cut squash available.

On the apple front, Ambrosias are done but the Cortland, Gala and Empire are still crunchy and delicious!

<-- Come by this week and meet Brenna, our newest addition to the Noggins Farm Team!

See you at the markets!

Root Vegetable Pakoras

It's April now, and so we have surpassed the "March root vegetable blues", but there's still not a lot of exciting greens on deck due to all the snow (and still snowing as I write this... Seriously!!).
Last night, faced with a fridge full of cabbage and root vegetables and a broken oven, I decided to jazz it up a bit-- I got some oil going on the stove and made panko-breaded sweet potato and turnip sticks, sweet potato fries, and pakoras.
The pakoras are something new I've been experimenting with lately.  They're so simple-- grate up root veggies (I used onion, parsnip, carrot, potato, turnip, sweet potato, celeriac), add desired spices (I used a great curry powder I picked up at the market a couple weeks ago) and gram flour (chickpea flour) until the mixture sticks together, form into small patties and then deep fry or pan fry until golden.  Yum!  I served mine with a tomato-apple chutney.

This week at Market

This week at market come and try our Honeycrisp Apple Chips!  They are made by dehydrating slices of this fine apple until the perfect crispness is reached-- and no sugar added!  They make a great healthy snack, and kids love them, too.  $2.00 for a small bag and $5.00 for a large bag.

Our 3L pasteurized Apple Cider has returned!  $7.00 for a box that doesn't need to go in the fridge until opened.  Blended with Honeycrisp Apples, the flavour of this juice is wonderful, and different than our fresh cider-- so give it a try!

This week also marks the start of a new Community Shared Agriculture season at TapRoot Farms.  Both the Hammonds Plains Farmer's Market and the Partners For Care VG/QEII Market are CSA pickup spots this year.  We look forward to seeing lots of familiar faces as well as some new ones this week!

Fully stocked on over a dozen apple varieties, root veggies, cukes and tomatoes from den Haan, cut turnip & squash and pea shoots this week as well-- so make sure you do your fresh produce shopping at the market this week!

See you there!

Teri :)
