Update from the Greenhouse!

I (Teri) am happy to announce Brenna joining our Noggins Farm Team!  My husband Jon and I are moving to Manitoba, and it's been a pleasure to train Brenna into my role.  Best of luck to all my friends at the markets, and as of next week you'll have Brenna full-time at the Pop Ups!  I will pass the torch on to Brenna officially now!  -- Teri

This Week at Market

This week at market we have the first of the peppers from den Haan Greenhouses.  Local sweet
peppers!  This farm also produces stunning cluster tomatoes, grape tomatoes, and english cucumbers -- Available at all the markets.

Spinach is in full swing, and we also have mesclun mix - a blend of different cooking greens like mustards, bok choy, kale, and spinach.

Squash is nearly done for the season, but we still have bags of cut squash available.

On the apple front, Ambrosias are done but the Cortland, Gala and Empire are still crunchy and delicious!

<-- Come by this week and meet Brenna, our newest addition to the Noggins Farm Team!

See you at the markets!

Root Vegetable Pakoras

It's April now, and so we have surpassed the "March root vegetable blues", but there's still not a lot of exciting greens on deck due to all the snow (and still snowing as I write this... Seriously!!).
Last night, faced with a fridge full of cabbage and root vegetables and a broken oven, I decided to jazz it up a bit-- I got some oil going on the stove and made panko-breaded sweet potato and turnip sticks, sweet potato fries, and pakoras.
The pakoras are something new I've been experimenting with lately.  They're so simple-- grate up root veggies (I used onion, parsnip, carrot, potato, turnip, sweet potato, celeriac), add desired spices (I used a great curry powder I picked up at the market a couple weeks ago) and gram flour (chickpea flour) until the mixture sticks together, form into small patties and then deep fry or pan fry until golden.  Yum!  I served mine with a tomato-apple chutney.

This week at Market

This week at market come and try our Honeycrisp Apple Chips!  They are made by dehydrating slices of this fine apple until the perfect crispness is reached-- and no sugar added!  They make a great healthy snack, and kids love them, too.  $2.00 for a small bag and $5.00 for a large bag.

Our 3L pasteurized Apple Cider has returned!  $7.00 for a box that doesn't need to go in the fridge until opened.  Blended with Honeycrisp Apples, the flavour of this juice is wonderful, and different than our fresh cider-- so give it a try!

This week also marks the start of a new Community Shared Agriculture season at TapRoot Farms.  Both the Hammonds Plains Farmer's Market and the Partners For Care VG/QEII Market are CSA pickup spots this year.  We look forward to seeing lots of familiar faces as well as some new ones this week!

Fully stocked on over a dozen apple varieties, root veggies, cukes and tomatoes from den Haan, cut turnip & squash and pea shoots this week as well-- so make sure you do your fresh produce shopping at the market this week!

See you there!

Teri :)

At Market this week

This week we are excited to herald the coming of SPRING with Spinach!  This healthful and delicious leafy green is grown by Dean Manning at Manning Family Farm in Falmouth, NS.  It has been overwintered in the
greenhouse which means it's extra sweet, and growing quickly with the longer sunny days we are having.  Pick some up at the markets this week!

Also, this week at the markets we're all ready to serve your Easter dinner needs.  Pasrnips, Sweet Potatoes, Turnip, Potatoes, Squash - Check out this recipe for Honey Roasted Apple and Parsnip Soup!

The QEII and IWK Markets will be held on THURSDAY this week, in lieu of Good Friday, and they will return to the regular Friday schedule the following week, April 10.

Check out Emily last Friday at the IWK, enjoying the new renovations:

If you miss us at the Pop-Ups, don't forget that we are at the Seaport Farmer's Market:
Tuesday to Friday 10 - 5, including Good Friday
Saturday 7 - 4
Sunday 9 - 4 (including Easter Sunday).

See you at the Markets!

View from the roof

Erv had to clear snow on the roof this afternoon, I have always wanted to see up there, so he let me take a look.  Cooool!!

HONEYCRISP Apple Chips!

As if you thought our apple chips couldn't get any better-- Today James and the crew were working on HONEYCRISP apple chips.  They are friggin' great!  The perfect texture, and a great flavour.  Here's some photos:
Hitting the shelves this weekend at Seaport!

Ian's Day

Ian and Melissa are away on holiday this week, and so I filled in and did the Wednesday city run.  It was lots of fun!  I picked up milk at Foxhill, cider at Stirling's, fruit, veg, and bread at the warehouse, cookies in Falmouth, and then distributed the orders to Alderney and Seaport in the city.  On the way home, I picked up two still-steaming pallets of 3L pasteurized Honeycrisp Cider at Mason's, literally "hot off the press":
Then I stopped at Dean Manning's place in Falmouth.  I was looking forward to this the most, as this was the first pickup in a while at Dean's and so I was looking forward to a tour.  Dean is usually around somewhere, and today was no different.  We entered the greenhouse and I immediately went down to a t-shirt-- what a nice place to be on a day like today!  So, join me on a photographic tour of Dean's!

Beet Greens- there will be two harvests of these over the next 2 weeks and then we'll have to wait awhile until the next planting is ready-- Look for these at Seaport & Alderney this Saturday!
Cucumber seedlings-- Did you know the roots smell like cucumber?  If you pick up the pot and smell the bottom, it does!
Seedling trays in the warmest greenhouse
The beet greens are being harvested to make way for these tomatoes!
Kale seedlings lookin' good!

Dean just planted out these lettuce seedlings the other day, and put down the plastic mulch to help warm the soil.  This is in one of the cooler side greenhouses, though it was pretty warm on a nice sunny day like today!
A sea of Spinach!  Yum, yum!
Kale!  This means there will be kale in a few weeks.  Dean has just given it some fertilizer, as when it breaks dormancy a little boost makes a big difference to turn it from a struggling plant to a vigorous one-- in Dean's words.
Dean showing us how high the snow is inside the greenhouse.  If you look in the background, you can see the reinforcements that he has had to add to the ribs.  This is the heaviest snow year he's ever seen!
Farmer Dean checking out his crops!
Today's picking of spinach in the foreground-- this entire house is full of spinach.  It is sweeter this time of year because it has overwintered and had to convert the water in it's cells to sugar, which works as a kind of "anti-freeze".  Mmmm Mmmm!
Thanks for the tour, Dean!  Always my favourite place to stop.  Find out more about Dean and Manning Family Farm at their website: http://manningfamilyfarm.ca/

This week at market

After a weather event break last week, we are excited to get back to schedule-- Thanks for your understanding!  This week at market we'll have the full compliment of local Nova Scotia goodies, which at this time of year ranges from phenomenal root veggies to stunning greenhouse crops like tomatoes and cukes.

Since moving here, I've learned the turnip is a special vegetable in Nova Scotia.  Technically a rutabaga, this yellow fleshed root veggie is well-suited to growing in the Nova Scotia climate, and our soils make it taste amazing!  They are sweet, flavourful and versatile: eat it raw as a snack, roast it, boil and mash it, add it to soups and stews, or try my favourite turnip recipe: Turnip Puff.  Celebrate Nova Scotia and eat a turnip this week-- We have whole turnip as well as 1 lb bags of cut & peeled, for your convenience!

TapRoot Farms' CSA (Community Shared Agriculture) Program is still accepting registrations for the 2015 season.  Convenient pickup at many locations, including Noggins Seaport, QEII Market, and Hammonds Plains Market.

See you at the market!

Andrew Returns from the Bahamas!

Andrew is back!  I saw him briefly yesterday morning, after I looked around for the Zippy Van, frustrated, and then entered the warehouse and of course it was inside, ready to load, and Greg was there to help me load-- Andrew is good at making sure everyone has everything they need to do their jobs with ease, so it's nice to have him back.  Not that everyone at the farm isn't super great, but with our fearless leader away it's a bit like every-man-for-himself, only in the sense that we are all busy and not necessarily minutely aware of each other's schedules like AB is.

So, upon his return, Andrew wrote me the longest email I've ever gotten from him, and I thought it was so well-put  (and even poetic, really!) that I wanted to share it:
"Wow
What A Welcome home
Spent Sunday fixing frozen pipes in my house . Next both the fridge and freezer had issues. Then I spent 3 hours getting air out of my heating pipes.
Wonderful, eh.
On the positive side as I was walking home last nite I was still able to remember last week in the Bahamas:  I was walking on the beach in my bare feet... now I am walking up a narrow side walk drudging along along in my heavy boots rubbing on my legs.

Was looking out over all I can see is sandy white beach .. now all I can see is a sea of white snow with angry banks on the sidewalk that at waist level threatened me as I imagined leaving the confines of the sidewalk.

was in temperatures of 24  C..... now slugging along in temperatures of 24   F

was looking out in the harbor at inviting blue/green water.... now crossing the Port Williams bridge glaring at the muddy waters of the Cornwallis dotted with big ice flows

was repairing the dock in warm clear waters ... now banging on frozen brakes, laying on my back in wonderful fluffy snow creeping up my back as I am squirming to keep warm

was walking along listening to the wind in the coconut palms ... now watching the freezing snow come down and listening to the sloshing sound as I forced myself up the sidewalk

was meandering thru the reefs in my outboard, ready to jump off to explore another reef.... now bundled up on a forklift avoiding big stacks of apples as I look for the ones Melissa wants

But anyway thanks for welcoming me home.. now have to go to work"

Welcome Back Andrew, I know we all missed you, but are so glad you got a well-deserved vacation!

Saint Mary's University Pop Up, March 11: It takes a village to fill a market table

Yesterday was the second annual Saint Mary's University Farmers' Market, which was conveniently on a Wednesday, so it fit into our markets schedule and we were able to attend.  I'm glad, because it was a great day!
The event was in honor of Sustainability Week, and it was great to see so many students and faculty out for the event.  The event was well-organized, led by student Angus MacDonald and Tony Charles, Director of the School of the Environment.  When I arrived (with a handy map and photo of the building from Angus), there were about a dozen volunteers who used their muscles and student energy to lug all the produce into the room-- what a treat!  They also provided free beverages for vendors, and parking passes.  All the little details were looked after, so commendations to Angus, Tony, and the team of volunteers for making it a great day!  In the farmers' market vendor world, these little details make a big difference in the ease of the day.

There were some questions about GMOs and Organic, and I was happy to answer them-- but the biggest questions were about production.  I often stand behind the market table and find this to be the case-- the general assumption is that I personally grew or made everything on the market table, which is flattering, but not the case!  Noggins is a fruit, mainly apples, farm, I explained to interested students and staff, but we work closely with our sister farm (TapRoot Farms) who grows many of the veggies we sell (pea shoots, squash, turnip, cabbage, organic apple juice).  TapRoot Farms is owned and operated by Noggins Farm owner Andrew's daughter Patricia and her husband Josh.  Our neighbouring valley farmers also have specialties that we are glad to be able to support-- such as Valley Mushrooms, who produce stellar mushrooms (which are a specialized crop that makes sense for one farm to produce, not every farm); den Haan Greenhouses, who grow stunning tomatoes and cucumbers in their heated greenhouses-- even in March!-- so that we can provide these locally-produced goodies on our table.  We also work with Greg Gerrits from Elmridge Farm (also at the Seaport on Saturdays) for his wonderful carrots, rainbow carrots, beets, parsnips, and sweet potatoes.  The parade of gorgeous juicy apples, delicious sweet apple cider, and crunchy apple chips on the table are all ours, and it takes a team of people to bring them to market: to name just a handful in the family: Dwaine, Andrew's son in law who manages the orchards and orchard staff, his daughter Carolyn who manages the farm, Melissa who runs the warehouse, over a dozen year-round staff and 20 to 30 seasonal workers, and of course, Mr. Andrew Bishop himself, an amazing man passionate about marketing, efficiency and production, to oversee it all.  My job selling and talking about all this produce is just one piece of the picture, for it takes a village of farmers to fill a market table, especially in the year-round markets!

So, you can now see that our market table is more about the community of Annapolis Valley Farmers than at first glance.  I love when we are able to come together with other communities, like the Saint Mary's University Community, to pull off something really special.  It was clear from the careful organization of all the little details yesterday that the students and staff at Saint Mary's are well-informed and supportive of the local food economy, and I speak for all of the people behind Noggins Corner Farm when I say we were honored to participate!

Here's a copy of our winter markets schedule, I handed out lots of these yesterday as well:

At Market this week

At market this week check out our stunning den Haan grape tomatoes, cucumbers, and beefsteak tomatoes!  den Haan is a locally owned and operated greenhouse in Lawrencetown, NS, just down the Valley from Noggins Farm.  They have heated greenhouses, so we can have a LOCAL taste of summer, even with the snow still piled up around us!  Their products are top-notch and flavourful, and a cure for the March "root vegetable blues"!!
Don't forget that March is Nutrition Month, and our crunchy apples are great portable nutrition.  We have Jonagolds just out of storage that blew me away this weekend, and of course everyone's favourite-- Honeycrisp-- are still going strong.

See you at the market!
